Katana
Katanas are the most iconic and widely recognized of all Japanese swords. Characterized by their curved, slender, single-edged blade, circular or squared guard, and long grip to accommodate two hands, katanas are traditionally used by samurai. The katana is renowned for its cutting ability, strength, and balanced design, making it a symbol of the samurai’s honor and martial skill.
Tachi
Tachis are older than katanas and feature a more pronounced curve. The tachi was traditionally worn edge-down, suspended by cords from the belt, making it suitable for cavalry use. The blade length of a tachi is typically longer than that of a katana. Its elegant design and detailed ornamentation often make tachis prized ceremonial and decorative pieces.
Wakizashi
Wakizashis are shorter than katanas and typically worn together with them as part of a daishō, or “big-little” pair. The wakizashi’s blade length ranges from 30 to 60 centimeters (12 to 24 inches). It serves as a backup weapon and was often used in close-quarters combat. The wakizashi is also significant in the ritual of seppuku (self-disembowelment), a form of honorable suicide.
Tanto
Tantos are Japanese daggers with a blade length of 15 to 30 centimeters (6 to 12 inches). They have a single or double-edged blade and are traditionally used for stabbing. The tanto’s compact size made it a favored weapon for personal protection and close-combat situations. They are also highly regarded for their utility and ease of carry.
Officer Sword
Officer swords, also known as Guntō, were used by Japanese military officers, particularly during World War II. These swords draw inspiration from traditional Japanese sword designs but often incorporate modern materials and construction methods. Officer swords usually feature a straight or slightly curved blade, simple guard, and a grip designed for use with one hand. They symbolize rank and authority within the military.
Here’s what our customers say
Can’t complain at all, for $159! Everything is tight and crafted with skill and care. Blade is straight and true. Hamon line is genuine. Fitment in the saya (sheath) is firm, nothing rattling, nothing loose. The wrap (ito, I think, is the proper term?) on the handle, or tsuka, is very solid.
Patterned habaki is beautiful, although one side has a very slight fault in the finishing.
Blade required some sharpening, so, it did not arrive as sharp as I’d hoped, but was about 85% of where I wanted it.

I did plenty of research and watched lots of video reviews of this Type 98 Gunto before purchase. There are a couple of similar ones made by other manufacturers, but this one had the best photos and reviews. It only took 13 days to arrive at my door from the time I ordered it. It came in a fully taped, well sealed heavy foam box. I already have an extensive and expensive katana collection, but I was totally taken aback at how well made this was and how beautiful it looked. The leather cover is thick and professionally made and the brass ornamentation is well crafted and detailed. The blade is absolutely superb. I cannot stress how fine a sword this is for the money. I would have gladly paid twice that amount for it without hesitation.

The patterned steel is real nice on this sword, considering that it is not so very expensive. I am not sure if this is a “Damascus” steel, but it looks real good. The sword itself is more on the soft side but has a good sturdy quality to it. It’s a tachi, which means that it is a very specific single edge cutting tool. It cuts well, but what is “battle ready”? What battle are you going to fight with this sword? The one in your backyard? Most likely so. Enjoy it for its craftsmanship and overall aesthetic value and be very cautious and safe with this archaic sharpened piece of metal.
